If two teeth are extracted from one side of the jaw, two more teeth will be removed on the other side. Although this sounds serious, tooth extraction for orthodontic treatment is less serious than undergoing a jaw surgery for realignment.

Timely development in children

There are cases where dentists recommend the extraction of baby teeth (also referred to as primary or “milk” teeth) that have not been lost at the appropriate time. If the dentist sees that the child still has a baby tooth that should have been lost years ago, extraction will be recommended. The reason is to ensure that the permanent teeth will erupt in the correct position.

Wisdom teeth

Wisdom teeth are an extra set of molars that usually erupts during a person’s late teens or early 20s. Not everyone’s wisdom teeth cause problems, but it is common for them to become impacted. Impaction means they come in a strange angle or have failed to come out entirely, causing the teeth to be trapped under the gums and push the adjacent structures. There are cases where wisdom teeth get infected, form abscess, and cause pain or swelling. As a result, people tend to settle for wisdom teeth removal to avoid potential problems.
